Where does the poop go?
The stool samples are currently being used for fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). FMT is used to help treat patients with recurring C. difficile colitis. There are an average of half a million infections in the US every single year. This disease is contagious and can infect anyone, but FMT has been found to be a promising treatment.
Since C. difficile colitis is so common, companies like HumanMicrobes are passionate about providing more options for patients. Finding an eligible stool donor is incredibly tough, and the tests are stringent to ensure the patient doesn’t risk any other infections.
How much does each stool sample cost for patients?
Each patient currently pays $150/sample but they are working on providing more affordable options for lower income patients.
How are donors chosen?
Currently, fewer than 0.1% of donors are accepted into this program. The application process includes a detailed questionnaire (~15 minutes to fill out), a stool type verification, a physical fitness verification, blood and stool testing (covered by HumanMicrobes or the recipient). The process is thorough since they need to ensure that no diseases or pathogens are transferred to patients.
The most common applicants accepted are healthy, young athletes ages 18-30. Children under the ages of 18 years old can also be donors with the consent of their parents. It is also preferred if the donors do not use antibiotics often.
HumanMicrobes is mainly accepting donations from America and Canada but since the pool of eligible candidates is so small, they’re considering donations from all over the world.
How much are donors paid per poop?
Donors are paid $75-150/sample which can amount to $4,500/mo!
What is the donation process like?
It is pretty easy! Whenever you are relieving yourself, just take a Ziploc bag, collect the sample, and ship on dry ice!
